Biceps tendinopathy is an overused injury that affects the tendon that connects the bicep to your humerus bone (also known as your upper arm). Your bicep is made up of two smaller muscles, the short and long head bicep brachii. The long head bicep brachii is often the muscle that is more prone to tendonitis than that of the short head bicep brachii. The long head bicep brachii tendon becomes inflamed and irritated causing discomfort around the shoulder area. This can be due to multiple factors including:
- Increase overload- For example moving house where there is a significant over head lifting and pulling in one day
- Increased activity- For example your first time back in the gym doing a arm workout after your winter break
- Sudden increase in repetitive use- For example if you have started a job that consistently uses your arms like a car washer or librarian
Occupational therapists and exercise physiologists have very different approaches to the rehabilitation of Bicep tendinopathy. Occupational therapy treatment of bicep tendinopathy focuses on de-loading the joint in order to reduce inflammation and shortening of the bicep muscle. Exercise physiology treatment focuses on loading the joint in order to increase stability whilst maintaining range of motion and therefore reduce inflammation of the tendon. Both treatments are effective.
Biceps tendinopathy rehabilitation
For your biceps tendinopathy rehabilitation it is important to fully understand your condition, especially that biceps tendinopathy often starts with a sudden increase of tendon loading. This is why it is important to have a therapist complete a full investigation into the activities which have aggravated your bicep tendon. By understanding what has aggravated the tendon you will be able to prevent future reoccurrence.
